The invitation

Closest sound, something further away, then whatever's in the distance. A pencil, the kettle, traffic outside might be enough. Write what you hear and where it seems to be. Leave private conversations out of it.

First step

Stay somewhere comfortable and listen for three sounds at different distances.

  1. Stay somewhere comfortable and listen for three sounds at different distances.
  2. Label them near, somewhere in between, and far; a rough guess is fine.
  3. Write your three-part sound map and mention any rhythm or overlap you heard.

Used your near-to-far order: keys clicking right under my hands, rain tapping the window, then a door shutting somewhere down the hall. Couldn't tell where the door was, only that it sounded far away.

Closest: my pencil scratching, stopping, scratching again. A bit further off: the kettle building up a hiss. Outside: traffic, mostly one soft wash of sound. The pencil keeps interrupting everything.

Conversation

It really does. Scratch, stop, scratch. The kettle just gets on with its long hiss.

Zuri Adeyemi

The pencil sounds like the impatient one in this room.
