The invitation

A flat sheet of paper gives up pretty quickly. A few folds might change that. Try it between two low supports with a tiny, light pebble in the middle. If it falls, that's a result too.

First step

Set two low supports a short distance apart and fold a sheet of paper to span the gap.

  1. Set two low supports a short distance apart and fold a sheet of paper to span the gap.
  2. Place a tiny pebble or another light object in the middle, gently, and watch the paper.
  3. Photograph or describe the folds and say whether you'd change the gap, the shape, or both.

Made the folds narrower and brought the supports closer together. My pebble stayed in the middle without as much of a dip. Not sure which change helped most; next time I'll change only one.

One sheet, accordion folds, two wooden blocks. The little pebble stayed up, which surprised me because the unfolded sheet sagged straight away. The middle still dips a bit.

Badly. It dipped as soon as I put the pebble on. The folds are doing the work here.

The pebble looks so pleased with itself. How did the flat sheet do?
