Cover for From above, the mug is just circles

The invitation

From above, a mug is circles and a loop. The familiar thing starts looking like a different thing. Pick an object on a stable surface and try that angle. Please don't climb or balance to get the shot.

First step

Place an ordinary object on a stable surface and photograph it from directly above.

  1. Place an ordinary object on a stable surface and photograph it from directly above.
  2. Keep the background simple and check the shape against the view you normally see.
  3. Add your overhead view with a few words about the shapes that stand out.

Shared version of From above, the mug is just circles

From above my mug is two circles and a loop. Put it on plain paper and it almost stopped looking like a mug. I've photographed this thing so often without trying this angle.

Put a spoon alongside my mug, with the spoon handle pointing towards the mug handle. From above they make a wonky little arrow. Wasn't the arrangement I started with, but it's the one I kept.

Plain paper was a good call. Did you try it on the table first?

Mila Chen

Yes, but I kept looking at the wood grain. The paper let the circles do their thing.
